The Boatyard

There is a shop in Wrenbury village, and after my early morning cup of tea I head here for supplies

It’s a charming place

The village shop is surprisingly busy, it’s clearly doing well. I buy some bread and return to the boat for breakfast

We set off just after 10am. Vera walks ahead to open the lift bridge.

I’m hoping that there will be someone from the boatyard to help me manoeuvre the boat into place at there are troublesome crosswinds and I have visions of getting this badly wrong

There is nobody, however. So I do my best to line the boat up and reverse alongside the moored boats. I amaze myself by getting this more or less right first time

In the laid back world of the marina there is no one available to start working, so we sit in the warm spring sunshine and tackle the crossword

The pump out is surprisingly straightforward.

Confession time. Yesterday when mooring up at one of the locks the left hand cleat at the front of the boat was sheared off. We want to get this fixed also

The remains of the old brass screws are drilled out and the cleat reattached with some steel bolts

Job done, all looks well. Looking at the steel bolts in the right hand cleat this has happened to someone else before

We also pick up a new cowl for the chimney.  Apparently, these getting blown off is a known thing

It’s 11.30 before we’re on our way again. It’s going to be another late finish to get to Nantwich as planned

Vera is chatting to this Australian couple at one of the locks. They are amazed that we have bought a share of a boat, giving us four weeks per year, for less than they have paid for two weeks boat hire

We are wanting to get to the Hurlston Locks before 4pm in case there are volunteer lock keepers to assist us through. This means no time to stop for lunch, so we eat cheese and tomato toasties on he move

We arrive at Hurlston at 4pm exactly, but there is no-one to help us through the flight

It takes an hour to get through the four locks. A respectable time

We arrive at Nantwich at 5.30 and moor up overlooking the town

We are hoping to get food at the Black Lion, but no food on Wednesdays

They suggest the Cheshire Cat, across the road. It’s a very filling meal

We cross the road to sample the beer range in the Lion. It’s an amazing pub
